New sidings for Penzance
A £6.55m investment by Network Rail and GWR will see the construction of three new maintenance sidings in Penzance.
Ponsandane sidings will be built to the west of Long Rock depot to accommodate nine-car trains. Funded by £4.8m from Network Rail and £1.75m from GWR, construction started in April and is expected to be completed within a year.
This latest funding announcement comes after a recent £1.14m upgrade of the St Ives branch line has provided platform extensions at St Erth and Lelant stations to allow GWR to run longer trains in high summer, providing an extra 2000 seats per day.
