One more glimpse: Steam in the British Landscape
By Robin Coombes & Taliesin Coombes THE cover image provides a taste of what lies inside: if you appreciate stunning images of steam locomotives in action, this publication will make a welcome addition to your bookshelf. However, if you are eager for facts, you will be left disappointed – it is an album format. Captions are on point and each image has a title, followed by brief details of locomotive(s), location and date. A pluspoint of this approach is that it allows the photographs to breathe – slabs of text do not spoil the images. Locations range from Beamish to the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway, plus the main line – with the Gloucestershire Warwickshire, Great Central, North Norfolk and Severn Valley also featuring strongly. This book is the third in a series by father and son team Robin and Taliesin Coombes – the others being Railways in the British Landscape and Railways at Night: From Dusk Til Dawn. Captured over the past 10 years, including some taken in 2020 and 2021, their latest effort comprises 125 photographs. In their introductory text, the authors state all photographs were taken from publicly accessible positions or with permission and under supervision at a special event – which perhaps further underlines the potential of this book to inspire others to capture fine railway images.
