The Rhätische Bahn recalled
By David Dunton THE Rhätische Bahn (RhB) is probably the premier Swiss narrow gauge system. The author uses the first half of the book to describe the system in general terms and highlights some of its key infrastructure, such as the Landwasser Viaduct, and has some details about its loco fleet. Not every class is dealt with at the same level of detail and, bizarrely, the large EMU fleets – both the older (and now largely withdrawn) units or the larger new Stadler built fleets (which will replace almost all locos by 2023) – are barely mentioned. The second half of the book is a dayby-day report of a visit in 2003 with tour company ADL – and, unless you were part of the group, this probably adds little to the casual reader’s knowledge of the RhB. The author unfortunately chose not to credit photographers alongside their pictures, instead leaving that to a list inside the cover and making it unclear to the average reader who took them. KF
