The Railway Magazine

Heraldry error

-

YOU feature an interesting misuse of heraldry across pages 18/19 in John Baker’s selection of Royal Train workings (October issue).

The picture of two Garratts hauling the Royal Train in Uganda in 1954 features Royal arms on the front of the leading Garratt. However, the shield shows the impaled (conjoined) arms of Her Majesty’s parents (King George VI and Queen Elizabeth), not those of our Queen.

I have a standing lecture featuring heraldry as used on our railways – and, take it from me, railway heraldry presents nothing less than a minor nightmare in origin and use!
