Stirling No. 1 special

I WAS very interested to read about GNR No. 1’s 1938 main line specials in your ‘A Single from The Cross’ article (September issue), and I immediately recognised one of the pictures of No. 1 in action from my own collection.

I have an original H C Casserley print of No. 1 passing Finsbury Park, with the photographer’s handwritten description on the back, and I have attached scans of both sides of the print.

You will see that Mr Casserley dated the picture as being the August 24 run rather than the September 11 run indicated in your article.

Fascinating to read the background data behind the epic runs of this iconic locomotive after having owned this print for so many years.
