Peak Rail boosts its steam fleet

-

TWO industrial steam locomotives have recently relocated to Peak Rail – from Essex and Staffordshire respectively.

Bagnall 0-4-0ST No. 2842, built in 1946, has moved from the Chasewater Railway to Rowsley for its 10-year overhaul to begin.

Another recent arrival is Hawthorn Leslie 0-6-0ST (3837/1934) from the Epping Ongar Railway. Owned by the 3837 Locomotive Group, the former Stewarts and Lloyds loco is currently stored awaiting overhaul at the Derbyshire heritage line.

Meanwhile, Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns 0-4-0ST (7063/1942), running as CEGB No. 15 has recently had its tyres turned and new underkeep pads fitted to the axleboxes. The loco is one of Peak Rail’s regular performers on passenger trains.

Of the other industrial locomotives, RSH ‘Austerity’ 0-6-0ST (7136/1944) is currently undergoing major overhaul, which is progressing slowly but surely.

The overhaul of another 0-6-0ST is also progressing steadily – Hawthorn Leslie (3138/1916) Holwell No. 14. Since its move from Rocks by Rail in January 2019, the tank has been repaired and attention has recently focussed on horn guides and axleboxes. New piston rings have also been ordered.
