Crewe Heritage Centre adds a Class 91 to its modern locos collection
AC electric Class 91 No. 91120 has gone on display at Crewe Heritage Centre on long-term loan from Europhoenix, the loco hire company and exporter of main line locos to European railways. Previously No. 91020 Royal Armouries, the 1990-built 25kV loco was transferred from storage at Barrow Hill, from where it was expected to have been exported.
It was moved by rail as 0Q42 from Barrow Hill, hauled by
Class 37/9 No. 37901. However, a problem occurred south of Chesterfield, resulting in
No. 37601 hauling both locos from Derby to Crewe, arriving on September 28.
This was one of 31 Class
91s built by BREL, Crewe subcontracted from GEC in 1988-91 for the East Coast Main Line electrification from London to Edinburgh. While some remain in service alongside their IET replacements, others are now being broken up.
