‘Earth Friendly’ concrete base is poured at Euston

-

CONTRACTORS estimate that the use of ‘Earth Friendly’ (EFC) rather than standard concrete for temporary foundations on the Euston station construction site has reduced their carbon footprint by 76 tonnes. The concrete was poured to form a 232 cubic metre (8193 cubic feet) base for polymer silos that will be used for piling work at the north end of the site over a two-year period. Instead of using Portland cement, EFC is made from a combination of ground granulated blast furnace slag, pulverised fly ash and a chemical with a high-alkaline content. Described as the UK’s largest pour of the substance to date, it is seen by HS2 as a major step forward in evaluating the potential of EFC.
