Leander to star in Lakeside celebration?

Two Beet family-owned steam locos could help Lake District line to mark milestone year.

LMS ‘Jubilee’ No. 45690 Leander could visit the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway in 2023 – the Carnforth-based 4-6-0 making a rare appearance at a non-main line connected railway. In a statement, the Cumbrian heritage line said: “We are looking at ways we might celebrate our half-century at the start of next season. A possibility that we are endeavouring to make happen is to bring Leander to Haverthwaite for a short visit. For this to be realised, it must make financial sense and all connected parties are working hard to cover the extra costs that would be incurred. Peter Van Campenhout is looking at arranging photographic charter days. “We are targeting the return to steam of BR Ivatt ‘2MT’ 2-6-0 No. 46441 for the beginning of next season so the potential ‘Jubilee’ visit would also bring the two Beet family-owned engines together in steam.” The overhaul of No. 46441 continues to progress well. By early November, the firebox work was close to completion. The foundation ring awaits caulking and ashpan studs require fitting.

Overhaul

The large flue NDT (NonDestructive Testing) sample inspection result is imminent and this will allow tubing of the boiler to start. The top feed and firebox backhead boss faces have been machined and new studs are being fitted. The stripped, cleaned and repaired fire hole door assembly has been reassembled and is ready for when it is needed for the boiler steam test. Following piston ring repairs, Bagnall 0-6-0ST Victor (2996/1950) returned to service early in October and ran until its boiler insurance certificate expired on the 25th. In readiness for its 10-year boiler inspection, the ex-Longbridge loco has had fittings removed in preparation for lifting the boiler from the frames. Assuming no surprises are uncovered during the NDT inspection, the loco could return to the roster in a short time. Meanwhile, with Hunslet 0-6-0ST Repulse (3698/1950) requiring boiler repairs, the 10-year exam has been brought forward. The boiler has been removed and an NDT is awaited to determine the scope of boiler work required.
