MARTON REMEMBERED:

- TREVOR HALL

Blackpool Corporation No. 31 is seen alongside Gateshead No. 16 at Home Farm, Beamish Museum on October 14, with its destination blind set to ‘Marton’. This was the route for which it was originally built (as a four-wheel car, by the Midland Railway Carriage & Wagon Company) in 1901. More usually indicating other Blackpool locations ‘Starr Gate’ and ‘Central Station’, the blind was reset to mark the 60th anniversary of the closure of the Marton branch, which took place on October 28, 1962. The closure decision was made on the basis that bus services for the area were a cheaper option.
