As Sherlock fans know, writer Steven Moffat is a master at teasing us with the secrets of his stories so that we’re hooked right from the start.

So it is with this four-part drama thriller, in which we’re introduced to a rather prim and proper maths tutor, Janice (Dolly Wells), investigative journalist Beth (Lydia West), vicar Harry (David Tennant, right) and – on the other side of the Atlantic – a serial killer on death row, Grieff (Stanley Tucci), who acts as an amateur detective. Quite what this motley quartet have to do with each other gradually emerges, before we’re left on a cliffhanger at the end of the episode, and part two continues at the same time on Tuesday night. Moffat’s clever plotting and quotable dialogue is complemented by a great cast to ensure this is entertainment of the highest order. ★★★★★
