It’s only two-and-a-half years since Sam Mendes’s First World War epic, 1917, which might make you think it’s too soon for another film marking the mud and attrition of the Great War. But the thing about All Quiet On The Western Front, which is based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel, is that it’s told, with subtitles, from the German perspectiv­e. Felix Kammerer is terrific as the 17-year-old schoolboy who marches off so proudly, only to quickly discover the full horror of war. From Friday
