HOW THE SCOTS PLAYED

-

OLLIE SMITH (7 out of 10) –

Keen to make his mark and made some yards. Next cab off the rank when Stuart Hogg hangs up his boots. KYLE STEYN (6) – A quiet game. Not sure he touched the ball in the second half. HUW JONES (7) – Without Russell to feed him his attacking qualities weren’t to the fore.

SIONE TUIPULOTU (8) –

A key man. Dummy run took out two tacklers for Kinghorn’s first and his grubber kicks indicate a real rugby brain.

DUHAN VAN DER MERWE (7) –

Went looking for work all game, carried like his life depended on it and scored a pearl of a try.

BLAIR KINGHORN (8) –

Hat-trick shows he’s better finishing chances from wing or full-back than he is creating them at fly-half. Carried very well.

BEN WHITE (7) –

Quieter than of late but still sharp and absolutely the man to wear the 9 shirt at this year’s World Cup.

PIERRE SCHOEMAN (8) –

Solid in the scrum? Yup. Carried like a bull in the loose? Yup.

GEORGE TURNER (7) –

Didn’t catch the eye as much as he often does but worked away and lineout went better than last week.

ZANDER FAGERSON (7) –

Gave away the usual penalty or two but part of a front row that had their direct opponents on toast. JONNY GRAY (7) – Racked up the tackles from the boiler-room. Solid and unshowy.

SAM SKINNER (7) – Made the most of his first start this championship.

JAMIE RITCHIE (7) –

Growing into his role as skipper, worked with the ref to find out what he wanted to see at the breakdown.

HAMISH WATSON (7) –

Easing himself back into the Test arena. Didn’t miss a tackle and carried well.

JACK DEMPSEY (9) –

Man of the Match with an incredible 23 tackles and made 80m with the ball in hand. Excellent.

■ REPLACEMENTS –

All played their part but former Ireland Under-20 fly-half Ben Healy came on for his debut to add to Scotland’s options at 10. ends
