SEEN Hair Care

Dr Iris Rubin, dermatologist and founder of SEEN talks to us about the haircare brand

Tell us about SEEN.

Haircare is skincare, since hair products can get on your skin and stay on your skin for hours, including on your scalp, face and back. Rinse-off hair products can also leave an invisible residue on the skin! The residue from hair products can cause breakouts, irritation, and scalp issues. At SEEN we develop and test hair products like a luxury skincare product. All SEEN products are clinically proven to be non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and non-irritating.

It took us four years to formulate our products and get them just right. Our goal was to create products that deliver amazing haircare AND are good for skin. No compromises. We also have good-for-skin additives, including bisabolol, a naturally derived skin soothing ingredient, and a silicone substitute derived from plant sugar. Our products are vegan, colour-safe and are formulated without sulfates, silicones, phthalates, parabens, dyes, gluten or animal testing.

We also created fragrance-free versions of all of our formulas, so that the many people who are sensitive or allergic to fragrance, or just prefer no fragrance, can also enjoy luxury haircare!

Why did you start the brand?

I noticed a few years ago that when I would get my hair done my hair would look great, though my skin would breakout. For me, haircare products were a surprising and significant source of my breakouts. Amazingly, as a Harvardtrained dermatologist, I had learned very little about the impact of hair products on the skin. I found myself having to choose between beautiful hair and beautiful skin, and thought why not have both? That was the start of SEEN, haircare that respects the skin.

What are the brand’s core values?

We want to empower people to feel SEEN, to have the confidence to do the things that are important to them, and shine their brightest light. There is so much skin science can do for haircare, this is just the start. We have a pipeline of new products in development and plan to listen closely to our customers to meet their needs and wants.

SEEN’s give-back mission is to support laser treatment for kids in the developing world with disfiguring birthmarks and scars, helping kids feel SEEN for their best self.
