Q What’s the best way to cover greys?
‘Grey hair has no colour pigment, so it’s actually white,’ says Sophie Maccorquodale, hair colourist at Salon Sloane. ‘Painting a white wall brown usually takes a few coats. The same principle applies to white hair.’ Semi-permanent colour will offer 50-70% coverage of greys, but won’t cover resistant white. The result is a softer, more blended finish. Permanent dye will cover 100% of greys, but you’ll get a harsher line as the roots regrow. You needn’t commit to a full head of colour when covering salt and pepper strands. ‘For those who have just a few greys, use Clairol Root Touch-up Permanent Hair Dye [£5.99, Boots] in a close match to your natural colour on grey areas only,’ advises Michael. If you’d prefer to avoid dye, note that Color Wow Root Cover Up, £29.50, Spacenk, washes out at your next shampoo.
