When it’s better not to work as a team
Rather than try to call up the details of an old movie with friends, wait until you’re alone. In a new study in the journal Psychological Bulletin, investigators analyzed findings from 64 studies and discovered a phenomenon called “collaborative inhibition,” which makes remembering more difficult for teams. The reason: People use different strategies for jogging their memory (like working backwards versus chronologically), and the distraction of competing approaches harms everyone’s recall.
