Can I catch COVID-19 from the public pool?

-

Taking a water aerobics class or walking laps in a public pool is an effective way to combat joint pain—and experts give the green light to do so during the pandemic. “There is no evidence COVID-19 can be transmitted through pool water,” says Ashley Lipps, M.D., an infectious disease expert at

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “The major risk is in your ability to maintain proper physical distancing from others.”

If you’re heading to a class, ask if there is a limit on the number of participants so you can be sure you’ll be able to stay six feet apart. And keep your mask tucked in your bag while you swim. “A wet mask can be less effective,” says Dr. Lipps. Also smart: Seek an outdoor pool. “Like dining, outdoor pools pose less risk due to better airflow and ventilation. But as long as you are able to maintain social distance, going to an outdoor public pool can be a safe, fun activity.”
