Citrus shown to lower risk of dementia
Older adults at risk of age-related memory loss who regularly snacked on oranges, other whole citrus fruits or 100% citrus fruit juices performed better on memory, motor skill and reaction-time tests than folks who skipped citrus. So say British researchers, who analyzed results of 10 prior studies and published their findings in Frontiers in Neuroscience. The scientists say citrus’ antiinflammatory compounds (flavonoids) can reduce memory-hampering inflammation in the brain. Another plus: Researchers found the flavonoids lowered the risk of depression and stroke.
