Better protection from mosquitoes

Catnip has been proven to keep mosquitoes away from Fluffy.

And now a new study out of Northwestern University reveals the natural plant extract is as effective for humans as repellents with the chemical DEET. Study author Marco Gallio, Ph.D., says nepetalactone (catnip’s active ingredient) keeps mosquitoes away by triggering a pain receptor in their brain. To make your own powerful spray, add 20 drops each of catnip and citronella essential oil (another proven mosquito repellent) to 1⁄2 cup water and 1⁄2 cup witch hazel in a spray bottle. Also smart: Arrange a few catnip plants around your deck or patio for a pretty, natural bug barrier.
