My Inspiration
The light as it flowed through the scene was my inspiration. The contrasting spatial patterns were immediately intriguing. I refer to this scene as a closed landscape because the audience is viewing one contrasting plane through another. These circumstances are my favorite to capture in paint. Subject matter plays the minor roll. It was not the driving force. The pergola with interlocking vines on the structure created delightful contrasting patterns everywhere. It was beautiful to me! Prior to beginning any painting, I have to see the visual challenge in order to become engaged otherwise, I lose interest. Know thyself!
My Design Strategy
The development of the designs begins when I see the scene. I squint my eyes to see the stronger contrasts. I frame the scene. I decide what are the largest areas of closely related shades of color that I see. These areas become the major parts of the design. I must make a plan to create the design of the painting. I can make this plan because I have mentally visualized a finished painting before I made the plan. I must set the direction of the light for the time of day of the painting. I must adhere to this. As I build the areas and objects of my scene I give them more information until I reach completion.

My Working Process
The process is gradual. In this painting I painted the foreground in a simplified manner. I contrasted the middle ground by making it lighter. I moved onto the background making it lighter than the middle ground and foreground. I refined the shapes of the objects within the scene. I keep the development of the objects as simplified as I can.
