1 Head right out of Grasmere Sports Centre down the A591 towards Ambleside. The road swings right over a narrow bridge in Ambleside, then left. Stay in right-hand lane and turn right to Waterhead. Straight on at traffic lights towards Windermere.

2 Go left up Holbeck Lane, straight on at Troutbeck, and then left up to the first major climb of the day - and the highest point - Kirkstone Pass.

3 Go straight on through Patterdale and Glenriddin­g, left onto A5091 up Matterdale End. Go through Troutbeck, heading north, and left onto A66 towards Keswick.

4 Turn left at roundabout into Keswick, left again at T-junction and right at mini-roundabout. Go past the public toilets, straight on at first mini-roundabout and right at second towards Borrowdale.

5 Go past Derwentwat­er, towards Seatoller and over Honister Pass. Descend into Buttermere Valley and right over Newlands Pass. Descend into Braithwait­e and turn left at T-junction and then over Whinlatter Pass.

6 At foot of Whinlatter, take the second sharp left into Lorton, left again, pass straight through the village and left onto the B5289.

7 Climb up Fangs Brow, drop down to Lamplugh village and left at T-junction. Go past the church, left towards Croasdale, right at T-junction to Ennerdale Bridge and then left at give way sign in village.

8 Turn left again after 400m, onto the long ascent over Cold Fell and down to Calder Bridge. Left onto A595 towards Gosforth for two miles, then fork left into Gosforth village. Left at minirounda­bout, go another 200m and then right to Santon Bridge.

9 Go over Irton Pike, through Eskdale Green past King George IV pub, left up Eskdale and through Boot village.

10 Go straight over Hardknott Pass (easier said than done), Wrynose Pass and through Little Langdale valley to Skelwith Bridge and onwards towards Ambleside, for the final easy run into Grasmere.
