Mille Miglia timepieces were first created in 1988 as a trophy for the winners of the eponymous rally in Italy, which takes racers over a 1,600km route from Brescia to Rome. Admittedly, there have been numerous reinventions of the watch; so, why is this one considered special? Because it’s the largest ever. The 2016 XL Race Edition looks and feels solid on the wrist, perhaps partly due to the slightly concaved caseback and partly due to the thick brown calfskin strap. A sense of vintage elegance surrounds the tachymeterinspired chronograph dial. It’s quite busy, surely, but the little red-arrow logo sporting “1000 Miglia” stands as a stamp of approval of how suitable this one is for any car junkie out there.
