Born under a motorsport tungsten light, the GT2 has a short but colourful history as the wildest production 911
GT2 993 , 1993 When homologation still meant something, the GT2 road car was created to allow Porsche to enter the sports car racing class of the same name. The aero included the mother of all rear wings, plastic arches to cover fat racing rubber and a serious weight reduction thanks to aluminium doors and bonnet, thinner glass and ditched air-con and electric windows. GT2 996 , 2002 With the impetus of competition no longer an issue, the 996 GT2 was far more road-focused – as much as a car with 476bhp can be. The emphasis was on the motor; bigger turbos and increased boost pressure, forged conrods and a dry sump pinched from the GT3. What wasn’t included was traction control – the GT2 oered ABS and nothing else. GT2 997 , 2008 The 997 GT2 was the last manual of the breed and took power beyond 500bhp – 523bhp to be exact, and 500lb ft of torque, still to the rear wheels only. Thankfully traction and stability control were now included, although you could disable both. In 2010 the RS version appeared for the irst time, reinjecting some of the Porsche Motorsport magic.
