“IF WE CAN LEARN TO MASTER THE LIGHT, OUR CHANCES OF SUCCESS WILL BE SO MUCH GREATER”

- MATT BENNETT, EDITOR matthew.bennett@futurenet.com

When we take photos, much of the time it is light that we are chiefly working with. Of course other factors count too, but if there’s no light, there’s no photo, for it’s light that we are actually capturing. If we can learn to master the light and use it to guide our compositions – and even our editing – then our chances of success will be so much greater.

In our feature that begins on p34 of the magazine, Peter Eastway has put together a detailed guide to mastering the light, looking at how to utilise different types of light, from sidelight to backlight, and how to let this inform your framing choices. He also explores image processing considerations and provides his essential tips.

Elsewhere this issue, street photography expert Linda Wisdom looks at the various techniques involved in capturing the decisive moment, showcasing her stunning street images along the way. Turn to p62 to begin reading it.

Portrait and product photographers, meanwhile, will be interested to know that our Staff Writer,

Peter Fenech, has taken a look at the workings of a pro studio for his feature this issue. It starts on p48 of the magazine and covers all aspects of studio management, tackling common problems and presenting possible solutions.

As always, we’ve got a great selection of shooting tutorials, interviews, product reviews and industry news to keep you abreast of the latest developments, and to help inform your future kit purchases.

We’d still love to see your own images of course, so as always please upload them to our website at DPHOTOGRAPHER.CO.UK.
