Optics feature updated AF and Image Stabilisation systems
The latest product announcements and industry developments
Following a number of updates to its entry-level EOS series of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, Canon has updated two of its most popular telephoto zoom lenses aimed at enthusiast and professional photographers.
The EF 70-200mm f4L IS II USM is an update for the EF 70-200mm f4L IS USM that was announced in 2010, while the EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS III USM replaces the EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS II USM lens that arrived back in 2006.
The most significant changes between the 70-200mm f4L IS II USM and the original version concern its image stabilisation system. In place of the previous four-stop version, Canon has furnished the new lens with an alternative that claims a five-stop advantage, and this is complemented by three different IS modes on the barrel. Operational noise is also said to have been reduced, which will no doubt please those intending to use the lens in more discreet environments.
Other benefits of this updated version include a reduction in minimum focusing distance, from the previous 1.2m to 1m here, and a weather-resistant design, which includes a fluorine coating on both its front and rear elements. Focusing, meanwhile, is handled by a ring-type USM motor, which makes use of a third-generation EF engine for enhanced performance.
The EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS III USM, meanwhile, has been designed with users of Canon’s EOS 1D and 5D models in mind. It features a 3.5-stop Image Stabilizer and now includes Air Sphere Coating (ASC) technology to help reduce flare and ghosting, in addition to five UD elements to help combat chromatic aberration.
Full-time manual focus override is also possible, while an inner focusing system maintains the same barrel length at all times. Other notable features include an eightblade diaphragm with circular blades, and a weather-resistant build.
The Canon EF 70-200mm f4L IS II is available now, with an RRP of £1,299/$1,299, while the Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS
III USM will follow in August, priced at £2,149/$2,099.
