To fit bust 82-86(92-97:102-112: 117-122)cm; Finished measuremen­ts: Bust 96(108:122:134)cm; Length 66(72:80:86)cm.

MATERIALS

4(5:6:7) 100g hanks of erika knight british blue 100 in French.

Pair each of 3.75mm and 4mm knitting needles.

Stitch holders.

2.5m of 5cm-wide ribbon.

Large-eyed blunt-tipped yarn sewing needle.

Short lengths of seam binding to reinforce belt openings.

TENSION

23 sts and 30 rows to 10cm square over st-st using 3.75mm needles.

NOTES

The ribbon belt is not designed to cinch the waist on the outside of the jacket.

As the stitch pattern is reversible, the Left Front and Right Front are worked to the same instructio­ns.

BACK

With 3.75mm needles, cast on 111(125:141:155) sts and work in rib as follows: 1st rib row (RS) K1, [p1, k1] to end. 2nd rib row P1, [k1, p1] to end. Rep the last 2 rows 4 times more. Change to 4mm needles and work in double moss st as follows: 1st row (RS) K1, [p1, k1] to end. 2nd row P1, [k1, p1] to end. 3rd row

P1, [k1, p1] to end. 4th row K1, [p1, k1] to end. These 4 rows form the patt and are repeated until work measures 19(21:23:25)cm from cast on edge, ending with a WS row. Shape for belt openings

Next row (RS) Patt 44(51:59:66), turn and cont on these sts only, leave rem sts on a spare needle. Keeping patt correct, work 16 rows straight, so ending with a RS row. Cut yarn leaving a long end and slip these sts onto a holder. With RS facing, rejoin yarn to sts on spare needle, patt 23, turn, leave rem sts on the spare needle. Keeping patt correct, work 16 rows straight, so ending with a RS row. Cut yarn leaving a long end and slip these sts onto a 2nd holder. With RS facing, rejoin yarn to rem 44(51:59:66) sts and keeping patt correct, work 17 rows straight, do not cut yarn. Join sections Next row With WS facing, patt across 44(51:59:66) sts, then patt across 23 sts from 2nd holder and 44(51:59:66) sts from 1st holder. 111(125:141:155) sts. Keeping patt correct, cont straight until work measures 37(39:41:43)cm from cast on edge, ending with a WS row. Shape for sleeves Keeping patt correct, inc 1 st at each end of next 6 rows. 123(137:153:167) sts. Cast on 9(9:10:10) sts at beg of foll 2 rows. Place a marker at each end of the last row to show start of sleeve edge. 141(155:173:187) sts. Keeping patt correct, inc 1 st at each end of every foll 9th (10th:10th:11th) rows to 153(167:185:199) sts. Cont straight until sleeve measures 21(22:23:24)cm from markers, ending with a WS row. Next row Patt 17(18:20:22) sts, turn and slip rem sts onto a holder. Next row Cast off 4 sts, patt to end of row picking up and working the wraps tog with the wrapped st to avoid holes. Cut yarn leaving a long end and slip these 52(58:67:73) sts onto a holder for the shoulder. With RS facing, slip centre 41(43:43:45) sts onto a holder, rejoin yarn to rem sts and work as follows:

Next row Cast off 4 sts, patt to end of row picking up and working the wraps tog with the wrapped st to avoid holes. Cut yarn leaving a long end and slip these 52(58:67:73) sts onto a holder for the shoulder.

RIGHT FRONT

With 3.75mm needles, cast on 61(67:75:83) sts and work 10 rows in rib as given for Back. Change to 4mm needles and work in double moss st as given for Back. Cont in double moss st until front measures 19(21:23:25)cm from cast on edge, ending with a WS row.

Shape belt opening

Next row (RS) Patt 17, turn and cont on these sts only, leave rem sts on a spare needle. Keeping patt correct, work 16 rows straight. Cut yarn leaving a long end and slip these sts onto a holder. With RS facing, rejoin yarn to rem 44(50:58:66) sts and keeping patt correct, work 17 rows straight, so ending with a RS row, do not cut yarn. Join sections With WS facing and keeping patt correct, work across all 61(67:75:83) sts until work measures 37(39:41:43)cm from the cast on edge, ending with a RS row.

Shape underarm and sleeve Next row (WS) Inc in first st, patt to end.

Next row Patt to last st, inc in next st. Rep last 2 rows twice more. 67(73:81:89) sts. Cast on 9(9:10:10) sts at beg of next row. 76(82:91:99) sts. Place marker at sleeve edge to show start of sleeve. Keeping patt correct, inc 1 st at sleeve edge on 6 foll 9th (10th:10th:11th) rows, at

the same time, when sleeve measures 10(10.5:11:11.5)cm from marker, ending with a WS row, shape neck as follows:

Next row Cast off 15 sts in patt, patt to end of row. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 6 rows, then on 7(7:7:9) foll RS rows, then on 2 foll 3rd rows. Keeping patt correct and working inc at sleeve edge as set, cont until armhole measures 21(22:23:24)cm from the marker, ending with a WS row. 52(58:67:73) sts. Shape shoulder Work in short turning rows as follows:

Next row (RS) Patt to last 13(15:17:19) sts, wrap next st, turn. Next row Patt as set.

Next row Patt to last 26(30:34:37) sts, wrap next st, turn. Next row Patt as set.

Next row Patt to last 39(44:51:55) sts, wrap next st, turn. Next row Patt as set.

Next row Patt across all 52(58:67:73) sts, picking up the wraps as you work to avoid holes. Cut yarn leaving a long end and slip these sts onto a holder for shoulder.

LEFT FRONT

As the stitch pattern is reversible, work exactly as given for Right Front.

COLLAR

Making sure you now have one Right Front and one Left Front, join both shoulders using the three needle cast off method with WS of fronts tog so that the seam is on the outside of your work. With WS facing, 3.75mm needles and starting and finishing 8 sts in from centre front edges, pick up and k6 sts along left front neck, 29(31:33:35) sts up left front neck and 4 sts across left back neck, rib across 41(43:43:45) sts from centre back st holder, then pick up and k4 sts across right back neck, 29(31:33:35) sts down right front neck, and 6 sts along right front neck. 119(125:129:135) sts. Work in rib as given for Back until rib measures 7.5cm. Cast off in rib.

TO FINISH

Neatly weave in yarn ends. Gently steam on reverse, avoiding the ribbing. Join side seams. Re-inforce the belt opening slits by stitching seam binding onto the wrong side of the slit edges. Thread ribbon through the slits, so that the ends emerge onto the front of the jacket, tie in a bow.
