Another factor was the very large entry of around 1,000 head. Thomas Potterton noted that store men helped take up some of the slack, with 35-40kg lambs averaging €84/hd, €3/hd better than this time last year. Factory types in the 40-45kg bracket averaged €95/hd, while heavier 45-50kg stock averaged €101/hd, with the top price of €107/hd going to a batch weighing 45kg. €150/hd Average paid for seven 43.8kg ewe lambs at Mountbellew Ballinrobe Another fine yard of sheep, with lighter store lambs improving to €77-102/hd. Factory lambs sold from €95-118/hd, with ewe lambs making €107-128/hd, while fat ewes sold from €72-117/ hd. Dowra Numbers were a little tighter than previously, but 2,600 sheep is still an awful lot of wool. Trade was reported as steady for factory types, with averages ranging from €95-108/hd, while forward store lambs sold from €75-95/hd, with the best of the ewe lambs selling from €80-116/hd. Sixty 33kg lambs averaged €85/hd, thirty-five at 42kg made €102/hd, while fifteen weighing 49kg/hd averaged €108/hd. Dingle Neilius McAuliffe reported a good-size sale with trade steady. “Lambs are weighing well and the store men were very active,” he said. Store lambs sold in general from €2.20-2.40/kg, with ewe lambs averaging around €2.30/kg. Continuing demand from factory agents and wholesalers saw fat lambs also make €2.30/kg. Mountbellew Enniscorthy There were increased numbers of breeding sheep on offer, with ewe hoggets selling from €152-200/hd, while first-crop ewes made €140-188/hd. Plainer lots were a harder sell. Numbers of store lambs were similar to the previous week with ewe lambs a steady trade, although factory lambs were easier. Sample prices included seven 43.6kg ewe lambs at €125/hd, six 35.7kg ewe lambs at €86/hd, while seven top-quality ewe lambs made a cracking €150/hd. Stag ewes sold from €90/ hd. Although Kevin Murphy calculated that sheep were back from €5-7/hd with 48-60kg heavy lambs averaging €108-113 and quality 46kg lambs making €110/hd he still thinks factory prices could stabilise. “Factories are trying their case because everyone expects them to. That’s different to saying there’s a heap of sheep in the system,” he told me. Kevin also noted that breeding sheep are coming earlier with last week’s show of 300 hoggets averaging €181/hd. — —
