special report infrastructure istock x Floating wind farms may add to energy mix Renewables offer stable, inflation-linked yield Investigations are under way to assess the feasibility of floating offshore wind turbines off SA’S steep coast, which offers large areas with strong and consistent winds. Floating wind farms have a minimal sub-sea environmental impact and don’t require any noise mitigation measures. Offshore wind may therefore soon be recognised as part of the energy mix pending the outcome of a feasibility study, says SA Wind Energy Association CEO Ntombifuthi Ntuli. “Though not a new technological development at global level, if the feasibility is positive, this will definitely be uncharted waters for SA,” she says. “Existing and future SA industries will be fully capable of providing a high percentage of local content.” x x . 54 financialmail.co.za July 9 - July 15, 2020
