The food memory: Fish braais and
Seaside foraging and big family braais were a constant for Allistaire, who grew up in the False Bay town of Strandfontein. “One of my fondest memories is of when the family would get together for a seafood braai. My mom, Denise, and her sisters would make all the salads in the kitchen, from spicy noodle salad and green salad to potato salad,” he says. “My dad, Glyn, and my uncles would be around the fire braaiing snoek or yellowtail, crayfish and braaibroodjies, and drinking ice-cold beer.” Holidays were also a time of beach outings for the Lawrences. “I remember going with my family to Simon’s Town, and my granny Joyce showing us how to harvest alikreukel off the rocks near Boulders Beach and the naval hospital. Once we had collected enough, we boiled the alikreuekel in salt water and prised them from the shells using a needle or pin.”
