KAREN’S HERITAGE CAN BE TRACED

to somewhere between her father’s home town of Genadendal (a Moravian mission station in the Overberg 90 minutes out of the city) to her mother’s home on the outskirts of the Bo-Kaap (“Oh, she was a real city girl!”). Her childhood was spent in Heathfield, Fairways and Zeekoevlei on the Cape Flats, while she now lives and works in gentrifyin­g Woodstock.

“I’ve grown up with my roots in this fractured, painful place but I was determined to break through any restrictio­ns placed on me. I’ve only come around to understand­ing my racial identity later in life,” she says. Karen adds that many South Africans thrive on
