1
PINOT NOIR
With its soft tannins, flavours of red fruit and spice, and fairly high acidity, Pinot Noir is an excellent food wine. Pour it with duck, pork, mushrooms and tuna.
2
GRENACHE
Often found in Rhône-style blends, Grenache is also a crowd-pleasing single varietal loved for its spice and fruit (raspberries, plums, orange rind and cherries). Delicious with roasted vegetables and slow-braised beef with Asian spices.
3
MERLOT
Cherry, chocolate, smooth tannins … what’s not to love? A soft, fruity, light Merlot is even a match for roast chicken or mushroom-based recipes. Also a winner with pizza and charcuterie.
4CABERNET
FRANC
It’s not easy to find a wine that matches tomato-based sauces but
Cab Franc ticks all the boxes. This understated relative of bolder Cabernet Sauvignon has a herbaceous, fruity character (raspberry, bell pepper, mint) that also matches game bird recipes and grilled veg.
5
CINSAULT
Flavours of mulling spices, floral notes, strawberry and redcurrant pair well with a variety of roast meats, veggie moussaka and even an oozy baked Camembert.
