EXPERT ADVICE
What’s the perfect red wine for white-wine fans? We asked the pros for their recommendations. (The short answer: you can’t go wrong with Cinsault)
THE WINE EDUCATOR AND TOUR GUIDE
Tuanni Price of Zuri Wine (zuriwine.com) says Gamay gets her vote. “It’s great because of its light colour and mouthfeel, as well as flavours layered with dark red fruits and floral notes. Perfect with a warm salad of roast butternut, baby marrow, pomegranate seeds and feta.”
THE WINE WRITER AND PODCASTER
Tshepang Molisana (@tshepangmolisana) will be sipping Grenache this winter. “I suggest it for Albariño enthusiasts because of the grape’s Spanish origins. It’s a great match with lamb pitas.”
THE WHITE-WINE MAKER
Riandri Visser (@riandrivisser) of Cape Point Vineyards, known as the Siren of Sauvignon for her award-winning Sauvignon Blancs, says Pinot Noir is her go-to red, but “in SA we also have some stunning Cinsault that could easily fill my glass.”
THE RED-WINE MAKER
Praisy Dlamini (@praisyd) admits that she’s slightly biased – she makes the Adama Wines Cherry Cinsault (R79.99) for Woolies. “Its generous fruity flavours and juicy, well-balanced palate pair well with seasonal salads or gourmet pizzas.”
“Cinsault is a fleshy grape with approachable acid, low tannins and red berry flavours” – Rob Gower, Woolworths wine buyer
