OHRID
Known to environmentalists as Europe’s Galápagos, Macedonia’s Lake Ohrid is the most biodiverse lake of its size in the world. Home to 350 unique marine species, it’s also one of the continent’s most beautiful beach destinations – quite a surprise for a landlocked country. A new Wizz Air flight from Luton is opening it up to UK holidaymakers, while the government is investing heavily in infrastructure and upgrading accommodation with a lakeside development that will open in spring. Ottoman-style houses lead up to an ancient amphitheatre and castle which overlook the water. Travel in May, June or September when there are no
public holidays.
