14 news THE PRESS AND JOURNAL November 2019 Mighty ships setting forth to take place at the heart of Royal Navy R Carriers end product of mammoth undertaking, says esidents along the Moray Firth are rarely excited by the sight of a passing ship. It is a busy stretch of water and many impressive craft are regularly spotted, even big ocean liners and towering oil rigs. But giant new Royal Navy aircraft carriers, each coming in at more than 60,000 tonnes, are not a common sight. There is nothing quite like the thrill of a close-up view of HMS Queen Elizabeth or Prince of Wales. They are the largest and most powerful ships ever constructed for the Royal Navy, and each comes with a price tag of more than £3 billion. The sister vessels, constructed at Rosyth, have spent time on sea trials in the Moray Firth and North Sea. Prince of Wales has been in the area in recent weeks, following on from Queen Elizabeth in 2017.
