Description
Heart of Darkness (1899) is a novella by Polish English novelist Joseph Conrad about a narrated voyage up the African Congo River at the height of European colonialism. Charles Marlow, the steamboat captain, narrates his story to friends aboard a boat anchored on the River Thames in London. Marlow travels to meet the mysterious ivory trader, Kurtz, who has established himself as a ‘demigod’ in the region, and witnesses the horrors of imperial colonialism and the darkness of human nature. Originally issued as a three-part serial story in Blackwood's Magazine, Heart of Darkness has been widely re-published and translated into many languages. It provided the inspiration for Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 film Apocalypse Now and is considered one of the most studied works of literature in English.
