THE WEST COAST OF FRANCE: BORDEAUX, ROUEN & BRITTANY A TEN NIGHT MUSIC CRUISE ON BOARD FRED. OLSEN’S BLACK WATCH 10 SEPTEMBER 2019 Liverpool – Lorient – Gironde & Garonne Rivers – Bordeaux – River Seine Rouen – Saint-malo – Liverpool Combining the rugged scenery of the Brittany coast, river cruising on the Seine, Garonne and Gironde, and overnight stays in two fascinating historic cities, our September music cruise is the perfect antidote to the end of summer. Musicians performing on this cruise include the Chilingirian String Quartet who will be reunited with their founder viola player, Simon Rowland-jones, pianist Carole Presland, soprano Sarah-jane Lewis, and baritone Morgan Pearse. THE ITINERARY After one day at sea, the Black Watch will arrive in Lorient. Known as the Five Port City, Lorient has a rich naval history and was at various times the headquarters of the French East India Company and a base for the French Navy. From here we will visit the prehistoric site of Carnac, where over 3,000 standing stones still mysteriously guard their secrets. Heading south we shall then spend two days in Bordeaux, a city that has been revitalised over the past decade or so, with its grand façades now gleaming and more handsome than ever. Bordeaux exudes a sense of style and sophistication and is renowned as the world’s wine capital – surrounded by the most celebrated appellations including Medoc, Paulliac, Margaux, Sauternes, Pomerol and St. Emilion – and we will have time to visit several nearby vineyards. Sailing around the Brittany peninsula, we will travel almost 70 miles up the Seine as far as Rouen, a city of great historical importance due to its association with Joan of Arc, Richard the Lionheart and Monet, who painted a series of views of the cathedral – his beautiful garden sat Giverny are just an hour away. Our last port of call is the picturesque ancient walled town of Saint-malo, close to the spectacular Mont St. Michel with its towering spire and maze of mediaeval forti cations.
