Romeo and Juliet is a dramatic tragedy written by William Shakespeare early in his career about two young lovers from feuding noble families in Verona. First published in 1597, it was among Shakespeare's most popular plays during his lifetime and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays today. It has become the quintessential story of young or doomed love, popularizing the phrase “star-crossed lovers”.
