He added: “There’s one bit in my act that’s only 10 seconds worth of stage time but it took me about three years to learn that one move.” Fraser enjoys combining his theatre skills with his love of magic, bringing new characters to life on stage to share with his audience. He said: “I describe it as characters who have magical moments rather than a magician doing tricks. “I love creating acts, mixing my experience in acting with expertise in magic. “It just takes it to another level; creating more of an experience for the audience. “When I was younger I did want to grow up and be a clown. “And then I started doing drama clubs and magic and it’s come full circle and I’m doing a clown magic act.” Fraser has now stood in the footsteps of renowned magicians including The Great Nardini, who went on to win the World championsh­ips in 2003; Paul Dabek who is currently touring in the world’s biggest illusion show, The Illusionis­ts; and High Jinx Magic who have their own show in Blackpool and have performed at Ayr’s Gaiety Theatre. Fraser Stokes, 23, placed first for his stage performanc­e and won the Dittia Shield for manipulati­onfor the second year in the row- at the British ring of the annual Internatio­nal Brotherhoo­d of Magicians ( I. B. M) convention in Eastbourne. The Kilmarnock Magic Circle President, who lives in Straiton, was the only Scottish magician in the finals and battled top competitio­n from four others from across the UK. And the BA ( Hons) Drama graduate reckons he is the first Scot to win the shield since 1954. Fraser said: “I couldn’t believe I won first prize- It’s still not sunk in to be honest. “It’s the biggest awards you can get in the UK for magic- so you can’t get any higher really. “The next thing I would like to go on to is enter into the European championsh­ips and then maybe in a few years the World championsh­ips. “The Worlds is really like the Olympics of magic- the level of skill involved is insane.” The passionate magician has a trademark original piece, inset left, in his performanc­e where he makes a full length standing lamp appear out of a suitcase in a Mary Poppinsesq­ue manner.
